Exercise is important, but so are food choices. You can exercise until you pass out, but if you're not eating the right things or the right amount of calories, the weight just won't come off. Here are the basic guidelines I follow:
* 1300 calories/day (this is pretty basic for women trying to lose weight. Men should eat a few hundred more)
* Only eat whole grains, and don't go overboard. I'll eat 1 slice of toast for breakfast. Or if I eat spaghetti, I really watch my serving size. White bread and pasta is a NO NO! It's bleached. It's not good for you. And it's loaded with bad carbs.
* Avoid processed foods. I try to follow the rule in Jillian Michael's book, if it doesn't come from the ground, or if it doesn't have a mother, don't eat it.
* Eat veggies as a side instead of fries or potatoes.
* Eat lots of veggies and fruits
Here are some examples of what I eat during the day. My diet is actually pretty boring, but it works for me so I stick with it. I eat more now for fuel rather than for enjoyment, so it doesn't bother me at all anymore.
Breakfast:
1 slice Healthy Life Whole Grain 35 calorie bread with 1 Tbsp. peanut butter
or
1 banana w/ 1 Tbsp. peanut butter
or
2 egg whites, 1 whole egg. You can scramble them, or make them into an omelette with veggies and a little cheese if you want. 1 slice Healthy Life bread, toasted w/ 1 tsp. butter
(I also always have coffee with breakfast, something I haven't given up. I use 1 Tbsp. of creamer in it, which is about 60 calories. If you don't use sugar or creamer in the mornings, you can eat another slice of bread or an extra egg)
Snacks:
Almonds. I get the unsalted, whole natural almonds. I actually like them better than the salted roasted ones anyway. I eat about 14 (serving size is 28) when I'm snacky. (once or twice a day) They're filling and so good for you.
Yogurt. I eat Activia because it doesn't have any HCFS in it. And it's delicious. If I've got some calories to spare, I'll add some granola. (I get the Bear Naked brand)
String cheese. Good for you, and very filling.
Gum! If you're just snacky and not really hungry, eat some gum. It helps curb your appetite.
I'll try to post lunch and dinner tomorrow if I get a chance. ;o)
